MSTR Gamma Squeeze: When The Setup Is Actually Armed

MSTR carries the largest crypto-linked options book in US equities - $26.9M net gamma and $324M of vanna. The squeeze mechanism only arms in negative gamma, and right now it is not. How to tell the difference.

A gamma squeeze is a specific mechanism, not a mood. It requires dealers to be short gamma, so that hedging forces them to buy as price rises, which pushes price higher, which forces more buying. If dealers are long gamma the mechanism runs in reverse and every rally is met with dealer supply. The phrase gets applied to MSTR constantly without anyone checking which regime the book is actually in.

The headline: dealers are long $26.86M of gamma. A 1% decline forces them to buy roughly 286,000 shares, and a 1% rally forces them to sell the same. That is a stabilising configuration. Whatever else happens today, the classic upside squeeze mechanism is not the driver, because it cannot be while this number is positive.

For scale: MSTR's net gamma is about 6.7x IBIT's ($3.98M) and 19x COIN's ($1.41M). Its vanna exposure of $324M is over twenty times COIN's $16.1M. No other crypto-linked equity in the US market carries a book of this size.


What "Armed" Actually Looks Like

The squeeze setup requires three things to line up. Checking them mechanically beats reading sentiment:

  1. Net GEX negative. This is binary and non-negotiable. Positive gamma means dealer hedging opposes the move. Today: fails, at +$26.86M.
  2. Spot above the gamma flip and rising into call-heavy strikes. The flip sits at 93.26, 0.7% below spot. If price breaks below that level, the book flips to negative gamma and dealer hedging starts amplifying instead of dampening.
  3. Short-dated concentration. Gamma intensity scales sharply as expiry approaches. Today's 0DTE contribution is zero, so there is no same-day accelerant in the book.
Note which direction the flip matters in here. Because MSTR is currently in positive gamma with spot above the flip, the dangerous move is down through 93.26, not up. Breaking below the flip converts dealers from dampeners to amplifiers, and the same hedging machinery that is currently absorbing selling starts adding to it.

The Real Story Is Vanna, Not Gamma

MSTR's $324M of vanna exposure dwarfs its $26.9M of gamma by more than twelve to one. Vanna measures how dealer delta changes with volatility rather than with price, and at this ratio the volatility channel is the dominant transmission mechanism in the book.

The sign is positive, which means: if implied volatility rises, dealers must buy delta. That is an unusual and important configuration. It says a volatility spike in MSTR is mechanically supportive of the share price, because the hedging response to higher vol is share buying. It is the opposite of the equity-index default, where a vol spike forces dealers to sell.

Practically, this means MSTR's reflexivity currently runs through implied volatility rather than through spot. Watching net GEX alone will miss it. This is the same argument as why GEX is not enough, and MSTR is the cleanest live example of it in the crypto complex.


Why MSTR Moves More Than Its Bitcoin Beta

MSTR is not a bitcoin tracker. It is a levered claim on a bitcoin treasury with convertible debt layered on top, and that structure puts two independent hedging populations into the same tape:

  • Options dealers hedging gamma and vanna as described above.
  • Convertible arbitrage desks hedging the equity component of the converts, which requires shorting stock and adjusting that short as the equity moves.

Both populations trade MSTR shares mechanically in response to price and volatility. Neither is expressing a view. When they push the same way, MSTR moves far more than the underlying bitcoin move justifies - and that, rather than any single "squeeze", is the structural reason the stock has an amplified beta.

Compare COIN, which has the opposite profile: a large delta book ($222.7M, bigger than MSTR's $107.2M) against a small gamma book ($1.41M). Large delta and small convexity produces steady directional hedging pressure rather than reflexive acceleration. COIN grinds; MSTR lurches.


The Checklist

  1. Pull net GEX before anything else. Positive means the squeeze narrative is off the table until it changes.
  2. Locate the flip and note which side spot is on. That tells you which direction is the dangerous one.
  3. Check the vanna-to-gamma ratio. Above roughly ten to one, volatility is your driver and spot-based gamma analysis will mislead you.
  4. Check the 0DTE share. Zero means no same-day accelerant regardless of the aggregate picture.
  5. Re-check after every large move. These are settled-OI positions. They change on assignment and on new flow, not continuously.

Check the sign before repeating the narrative, and watch vanna rather than gamma while that ratio holds.
